Info
I am a software developer and an independent artist from the Netherlands, interested in creative technology — from web based and unstable media to audiovisual production. During my formative years, while attending college, I started organizing electronic music events and making (street) art. After finishing an MSc in Artificial Intelligence, I’ve been working as a developer of web-oriented and audiovisual applications, in the meanwhile pursuing my creative ambitions.
Formerly employed at the V2_ Lab in Rotterdam and the Centre for Mathematics And Information Science (CWI) in Amsterdam, I am currently working as a software developer at Buro Petr van Blokland + Claudia Mens. My work there focusses on the Xierpa library, which is a Python-based web environment that is aimed at generating documents for print, web and mobile devices.
Exhibitions
Participated in several exhibitions, the last of which was in exhibition space Vijf B from 27th of november until the 26th of december 2010.
V2_ Lab
At the V2_ lab, I worked as a software developer for the Move.me / Soft(n) project which was part of the ITEA “Passepartout” project and was led by Canadian artist Thecla Schiphorst. Tasks included the design and implementation of a server application in Python. This was done in close cooperation with the hardware engineers who developed a sensor-board extension for the Gumstix computer.
My main focus was on OpenSound Control (OSC) communication over networks, sensor analysis & machine learning and user interface development with the Gimp Toolkit (GTK).
The final result was presented at the Dutch Electronic Art Festival (DEAF) april 2007. The project also resulted in two scientific papers. The other team members were developers Simon de Bakker, Bart Stock, Rui Guerra, researchers Frank Nack and Lora Aroyo, and project manager Siuli Ko.
Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica
I completed my Artificial Intelligence master’s research at the Semantic Web Interfaces department (INS2) group of the National Research Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI) in Amsterdam. The result was a demo combining Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) with Prolog and my thesis, titled “Generation of Abstract Geometric Art Based on Exact Aesthetics, Gestalt Theory and Graphic Design Principles”, which was later accepted as a CWI technical report. The abstract is available here.
During 2007 and 2008 I worked at INS2 again as a scientific software developer. I worked under professors Lynda Hardman and Raphaël Troncy on various semantic web applications aimed at converting news metadata to RDF, enrichening this metadata by linking it to web services such as DBpedia and Geonames and disambiguating named entities. My main focus was on NewsML, a markup language specifically designed for standardizing news information. I also worked on the front-end of ClioPatria (using AJAX), a SWI-Prolog-based platform for Semantic Web Applications.
Naked
From 2000 until 2005 I teamed up with Jelle Herold of Defekt to organize an electronic arts event called Naked. After 5 successful nights we decided to hit the road for a VJ’ing tour, playing in clubs such as the famous Club 11 in Amsterdam, Patronaat in Haarlem and LVC in Leiden. We participated in the Visual Sensations competition in 2005.
